Words flittered majestically through the Merton Farm air, swirling around families and feeling warm against sun-bathed faces. The many sounds of syllables reverberating from poet’s golden tongues, leaving a trail of breathless listeners infused by the sudden joy of lyrical creation. Meshing with the vibrant music from stages across the green fields and the sounds of grass crackling beneath feet, poetry danced delightfully in the ears and minds of a sizeable audience, all full of curiosity.

On the Sunday afternoon Wise Words arrived at the stunning Lounge on the Farm Festival to present Spokes’ n Words. Pedals whirled with electricity as bikes provided by Wheely Groovy powered the microphones in the hands of poets. Willing audience members added the necessary voltage to the spectacular performances. Poets including Hibaq, Becci and Cici Rose captured the attention of festival-goers who were grazing between the experimental reggae performances on the main stage and the intimacy of the folk-tent in the Meadows; developing instantaneous verses from the wise words of audience members.

As luscious trees swayed in a gentle breeze, those individuals who had been lured by the commotion were now captives for the entire set - whilst others celebrated being inspired through engaging and taking centre stage. Two youngsters in particular amazed us all with their confidence; a boy who performed a poem he knew off by heart and Cici Rose’s daughter, who grabbed words from festival-goers and turned them into beautiful verse.

Sometimes an event simply speaks for itself, the superb setting of a glorious summer day permeated with the rise and flow of terrific verses. But sometimes, all it takes is a simple message from a parent to remind us that words really can be as magical, inspirational and transformative as we believe.

“My daughter, aged 6, was so inspired by Spokes N Words that she has been composing poems non-stop! She had never written one before and they make me tickle! I’d just like to share a few with you:

Dogs

Dogs in bogs

Dogs in fogs

Dogs’ n logs

Where are the dogs?

Books

Books with looks

Books with hooks

Books with cooks

Oh books

Carry on inspiring the little people!”

Spokes’n Words’ appearance at Lounge on the Farm ended with suitably unexpected and random words like ‘Gargantuan’, ‘Bacon’ and ‘Smile’ - it proved to be an event where poetry was reimagined.
