New Ways of Living | A conversation with Danny Chivers, Jess Worth, Hannah Silva and Dan Thompson | 4:30pm - 6:00pm
Danny Chivers:
Danny is an environmental writer, researcher, activist and performance poet. He believes that no movement for social and environmental justice can be successful without the creative arts, as a powerful means to connect with, engage and inspire people to action. He has performed his poetry at festivals, schools, conferences, at the top of illegally occupied power station chimneys and in front of lines of riot police all over the country.
Jess Worth:
Jess is a campaigner, writer, activist and theatre-lover. She saw her childhood dream of taking to the stage come dramatically true when she co-founded the Reclaim Shakespeare Company, a group of ‘actor-vists’ who use performance-based direct action to challenge BP’s sponsorship of arts institutions. See more about this HERE
Over the years she has run successful campaigns on a variety of social and environmental justice issues, including ethical investment, global access to AIDS treatment, trade justice, and most recently the highly-destructive Canadian tar sands, as co-founder of the UK Tar Sands Network. Four five years she co-edited the international award-winning magazine ‘New Internationalist’, and has also been a government advisor on sustainable development.
Hannah Silva:
Hannah is a poet, playwright and theatre maker whose work is characterised by its playful interrogation of language, voice and form.
When Hannah decided she wanted to find out why she felt so unengaged in politics, why nothing politicians were saying resonated with her life? With…living? an exploration of the language of politics became her way in.
Hannah will share her observations on the language of politics and what it is it about the way politician talk that results in them not actually saying anything at all.
Dan Thompson:
Dan is a trouble maker and place shaker extraordinaire. He is a social artist and writer living in Margate. His work is about people and places. He is interested in the creation of social capital, in abandoned or underused spaces, and in DIY approaches to art, culture and social action.
For many years it has been believed that the way to make a place better is through urban regeneration: iconic buildings, big projects and financial investment. This idea of placemaking believes that it is bricks that make places - but while we tinker with placemaking, many of our towns have lost their purpose.
A growing number of people, driven by the failure of big projects to consider people and the way the recession has stalled many projects, are exploring a new idea: Small-scale interventions, DIY urbanism and guerilla regeneration are shaking the foundations - a movement that Dan calls placeshaking.
